Firearms Training

Training in the proper use of firearms is essential for those working in law enforcement and for those wishing to obtain a license to hunt big game. Many different institutes offer courses in firearms training that range from 1 to 5 days in duration depending on the needs of the participants. A person with no knowledge of firearms has to take courses about the parts of a firearm, how to load the ammunition, how to clean the gun and store it safely. This part of the training involves working with a textbook and pencil and paper tests.

The second part of firearms training is the actual shooting techniques. The shooter learns how to sight its prey and aim for specific body parts. This involves practicing shooting at targets using blank ammunition. Blanks are used just in case an accident should happen and the shot will not injure another person.

Even with the initial training, those who regularly use firearms practice on a shooting range. Since this range is usually indoors, the shooter must wear noise-reducing headsets so the sound of the gun will not damage the eardrum and cause deafness. Protective eyewear is also essential. When shooting outdoors, these devices are not necessary.

During the course of the training, a student will learn how to hold the gun. For example, you hold a revolver with both hands to keep it steady since you may not have to bring it to eye level to shoot. When shooting a rifle, you have to hold it against your shoulder and use the sight on the rifle to make sure that the prey is within range and is in the proper position for you to take a shot.

You can take training in all kinds of firearms – handguns, shotguns, rifles and automatic weapons. Once you are familiar with using guns, you can take other courses to improve your accuracy. These courses do not involve lectures and classes and take place on the range. There are courses offered in night shooting, which, of course, take place at night. By taking such training you will learn how to reduce the length of time it takes you to load your firearm and shoot it and how to present the firearm from a variety of field positions.
